The main issue...@Jon
Fully agree with your remark.

The main issue is that the current European welfarestate simply looks completely unaffordable. Which is a near impossible sale for an institution whose credibility is eroding by the day. Better institutions as it is not only the EU it is also most of the EU countries (especially those down South).
Basically the only option left in most countries is raising taxes for the rich and for business (or run against the debt wall in a not too far future). And that won't really get the economy going does it? It is disparate elements going in different directions. The debt of poorer countries is increasing and the debts are already unaffordable and unpayable. Some of the stronger members may be recovering, while others get worse; the divergence can only become greater.Rollohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18255460090580758354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36227136.post-84716535646128176112013-11-05T21:43:43.341+00:002013-11-05T21:43:43.341+00:00OE - Is there any way that you could possibly comp...OE - Is there any way that you could possibly compare each (exaggerated) EU pronouncement since 2008 on an EU/EuroZone economic recovery versus the reality of the actual figures?

I think that the EU has lied and mislead everybody. Why are the people responsible for these ongoing 'porky pies' still in their jobs?! Are they perchance desperate?

Besides, I remember Sarkozy telling us all that he had fixed everything.

SC

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36227136.post-76315943360097283762013-11-05T21:36:27.226+00:002013-11-05T21:36:27.226+00:00I did take a look at the numbers, and the same thi...I did take a look at the numbers, and the same thing struck me as it did last year and the year before.

Each year we get very optimistic projections about next year's numbers. Then the year rolls around and all the targets are missed or in some cases get worse.

But no-one ever mentions last year's rosy projection. Instead, they juts issue a set of optimistic projections for next year.

I waited for someone to ask Rehn how you can have flat or rising unemployment in the next twelve months, but have Government deficits come down so sharply.

The EU now has six million fewer people employed than it did in 2008, five years ago. That's six million people drawing welfare instead of paying taxes. How does that result in sharply lower fiscal deficits?

The UK now has half a million more people in employment than in 2008, and even here the deficit has only come down to 5.4%.

The EU number simply don't add up. They never add up. Yet no=-one calls them on it.jon liveseynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36227136.post-27658088545175226212013-11-05T13:49:25.080+00:002013-11-05T13:49:25.080+00:00It's not projected to be a very fragile recove...It's not projected to be a very fragile recovery for Germany, only for other countries which should not be sharing a currency with Germany.Denis Coopernoreply@blogger.com
