But the EU management is mediocre at best.

A proper strategy would have to establish a point at which you will have to kick the other side in the private parts (and hard when necessary).
However before that the full picture in all its nastiness (from an EU perspective) should be communicated to the other side. Preferably in a way that doesnot reflect on UKs PM in his relation with the continent.
Unlikely eg that Poland will be very good friends for a few years after the reneg.

What Cameron however is doing is create unnecessary irritation at the other side of the table while at the same time (when opportunities come let them pass without using them). Timing of things is simply awful.

Not even to mention the rubbish communicationstrategy at home on this. Everytime like no...1. Serial messing up by Cameron.
Everytime like now when Mr Ed is for the take something is messed up.

2. Doesnot send a clear message on the EU. Turkey in while Rumanians (sort of) out simply doesnot go together.
Even worse as the credibility on this issue is still rather poor. He simply never succeeds to show he really means it.

3. This is not the solution of the EU immigration issue. The EU electorate will decide what is enough not the possibility to change rules without treaty change or with remaining an EU member.

4. He better realises that if he wants to remain PM after May.
Basically the Tories should have replaced him by Boris J a few months ago. Other candidates are simply too unknown (for that short period) or perceived as similar by the electorate or lacking charisma (or (usually all of these).
Unlikely that Mr Ed would still have a realistic chance by now.

Hard to believe this guy has a PR background. Bringing Turkey up when it is completely unnecessary. How stupid can you get?Riknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36227136.post-4661968342881608522014-12-12T12:45:40.744+00:002014-12-12T12:45:40.744+00:00"The UK could use its existing veto over new ..."The UK could use its existing veto over new countries joining the EU to insist on these terms."

Well then, why didn't the UK do that for Croatia?

The interesting question is what would have happened if Hague had not deliberately put a blanket exemption for all EU accession treaties into the fine print of his so-called "referendum lock" law: would the British people have voted to allow Croatia to join the EU?
Denis Coopernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36227136.post-65920962079524221142014-12-12T12:34:58.891+00:002014-12-12T12:34:58.891+00:00But even if the ECJ agreed with you that "acc...But even if the ECJ agreed with you that "access to in-work benefits can be restricted via amendments to EU legislation rather than a treaty change" it would make little difference to the volume of immigration from the poorer EU member states, given that the in-work benefits from the welfare system here are usually dwarfed by the in-work benefits just from having jobs here rather having no jobs or much lower paid jobs back home.Denis Coopernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36227136.post-70823103920209110162014-12-12T11:16:32.002+00:002014-12-12T11:16:32.002+00:00Cameron is all for Turkey joining the EU.
