"I deplore this initiative. This letter is provocative and has clearly been written for reasons of domestic policy."
- The caretaker Prime Minister of Belgium, Yves Leterme, in response to the letter signed by Cameron, Merkel, Sarkozy et. al. backing a 2.9% increase to the 2011 EU budget.
WEll, as the putative PM of a country that hasbn't got a government, and whose Government has refused tolisten to its population for years it is hardly a surprise now isn't it.
ReplyDeleteNot that the "It's a aspectacular success they only cut one leg off" achievment of Mr Cameron is anything to write home about.
Thanks Gawain
ReplyDeleteRe Cameron's 'victory' it depends on what he was forced to give up. A 2.9% increase without giving up concessions is a decent outcome (it's majority voting after all). A 2.9% increase in return for backing Treaty change would amount to a sell-out. Not clear to us which one it is yet...
If the Treaty change does not affect the UK, why worry about it? As Cameron told the Commons on November 1st, helping to ensure the economic stability of the eurozone countries is in Britain's national interest. Half of the UK's trade is with the eurozone, so let's drop the zero-sum "us v them" mentality.
